VPS Backup Strategy: Complete Guide

Daily + weekly + monthly. Local + remote. Encryption + periodic testing. We explain how to build a comprehensive VPS backup strategy.

Why You Need a Backup Strategy

Data loss is not a question of "if" — it is a question of "when." Disk failures, human errors, ransomware attacks, failed updates — all are real causes that can wipe your data in an instant.

The statistics are clear: 60% of businesses that lose their data without backup close within 6 months. Backup is not a luxury — it is insurance for your business.

The 3-2-1 Rule: The Gold Standard

Every successful backup strategy builds on the 3-2-1 rule:

  • 3 copies of your data minimum
  • 2 different storage media (e.g., local disk + cloud storage)
  • 1 offsite copy in a different geographic location

This rule ensures you do not lose everything even if an entire data center goes down.

Types of Backup

Full Backup

A complete copy of all data. Slowest and largest, but easiest to restore.

When to use it: At least once weekly.

Incremental Backup

Copies only data that changed since the last backup. Faster and smaller.

When to use it: Daily between full backups.

Differential Backup

Copies all changes since the last full backup. A middle ground between full and incremental.

When to use it: When you want faster restores than incremental without the size of a full backup.

Frequency Type What Gets Backed Up Retention
Hourly Database incremental Databases only 48 hours
Daily Full incremental Files + databases 14 days
Weekly Full Everything 4 weeks
Monthly Full + archive Everything 12 months

VPS Backup Tools

For Databases

MySQL/MariaDB:

mysqldump --all-databases --single-transaction | gzip > /backup/db-$(date +%F).sql.gz

PostgreSQL:

pg_dumpall | gzip > /backup/pg-$(date +%F).sql.gz

For Files

rsync (incremental sync):

rsync -avz --delete /var/www/ /backup/www/

Restic (encrypted + incremental + cloud-ready):

restic -r s3:backup-bucket backup /var/www /etc /home

Restic is the best option for encrypted backups — it supports local storage, S3, and SFTP.

Automating with Cron

# Daily backup at 3 AM
0 3 * * * /scripts/daily-backup.sh >> /var/log/backup.log 2>&1

# Weekly full backup every Friday at 2 AM
0 2 * * 5 /scripts/weekly-full-backup.sh >> /var/log/backup.log 2>&1

Restore Testing: The Part Everyone Skips

A backup you have never tested restoring is not a backup. Test your restores at least monthly.

Testing steps:

  1. Create a temporary test server
  2. Restore the backup to it
  3. Verify the application runs normally
  4. Document results and recovery time
  5. Delete the test server

The goal: know exactly how many minutes you need to restore everything (RTO — Recovery Time Objective).

Backup at CLOUD

CLOUD (cloud.net.sa) offers managed backup services for VPS servers:

Plan Retention Annual Price
Daily 7 days affordable pricing — pricing and plans
Daily 30 days affordable pricing — pricing and plans

These are server-level backups — but application and database backups are your responsibility. Use the tools mentioned above in parallel with CLOUD backups.

Encryption: Do Not Forget It

Every offsite backup must be encrypted:

# Encrypt with GPG
gpg --symmetric --cipher-algo AES256 backup.tar.gz

# Or use Restic which encrypts automatically
restic -r /backup-repo init
restic -r /backup-repo backup /data

An unencrypted backup in an external location means your data is exposed to anyone who reaches it.

The Cost of Not Backing Up

Scenario Cost
Data recovery from a failed disk 5,000 - 25,000 SAR (no success guarantee)
One hour of business application downtime Depends on business size — thousands of SAR
Permanent customer data loss Priceless + legal violations
Daily backup service affordable pricing — pricing and plans per year

The decision is clear. Start today.
