SSL Certificate Types: DV, OV, EV — What is the Difference

DV = fastest and cheapest. OV = company verification. EV = green bar. We explain each type and when you need it — with prices.

SSL Certificate Types Compared: Which One Does Your Site Need?

The SSL market offers certificates ranging from free to over $800 per year. The difference is not encryption strength — all modern SSL certificates use the same 256-bit AES encryption. The difference is the level of identity verification performed on the certificate owner.

The Core Framework

Type What Gets Verified Issuance Time Approximate Price
DV Domain control only Minutes Free to $50
OV Domain + business identity 1-3 business days $100-$400
EV Domain + extended business verification 3-7 business days $400-$800

DV (Domain Validation)

How it works: The Certificate Authority sends a verification file for you to place on your website, or a DNS record for you to add. This proves you control the domain — nothing more.

Right for:

  • Personal blogs
  • Informational and portfolio sites
  • Development and staging environments
  • Small projects not collecting sensitive data

Wrong for:

  • E-commerce stores accepting payments
  • Sites collecting personal or financial data
  • Businesses needing to prove legitimate identity to customers

Example: Let's Encrypt issues DV certificates for free and they are entirely appropriate for a blog or small business informational site.

OV (Organization Validation)

How it works: The CA verifies:

  • Your business is legally registered
  • The person requesting the certificate represents the organization
  • The business address and phone number are accurate

What visitors see: In the certificate details (accessible by clicking the padlock), your company name is displayed. It does not appear directly in the address bar, but users who check will see a real business name rather than just a domain.

Right for:

  • E-commerce stores
  • Professional services firms
  • Platforms collecting customer data
  • Any business wanting to prove a real organization operates the site

OV is the practical choice for most businesses. It provides meaningful trust signals without the cost and verification time of EV.

EV (Extended Validation)

How it works: Requires verification of:

  • Legal business registration documents
  • Physical business existence (some CAs make phone calls)
  • Authorized representative confirmation
  • Physical business address

Right for:

  • Banks and financial institutions
  • Payment processors
  • Government portals
  • Any site handling large transactions or highly sensitive data

EV certificates are the highest standard available. For most SMEs, OV is sufficient. EV becomes relevant when the cost of a security incident — reputational or financial — is very high.

Wildcard SSL: One Certificate for All Subdomains

What it covers: *.yourdomain.com — any first-level subdomain.

Examples of what is covered:

  • shop.yourdomain.com
  • mail.yourdomain.com
  • api.yourdomain.com
  • app.yourdomain.com

What it does NOT cover:

  • sub.api.yourdomain.com (second-level subdomain)
  • yourdomain.com itself (unless explicitly added)

When you need it: When your site operates across multiple subdomains. One Wildcard certificate is almost always cheaper than buying individual certificates for each subdomain.

Wildcard certificates are available in both DV and OV validation levels. Let's Encrypt offers free Wildcard DV certificates.

Multi-Domain (SAN) SSL: One Certificate for Multiple Domains

SAN (Subject Alternative Names) allows a single certificate to cover completely different domains:

  • yourdomain.com
  • yourdomain.net
  • anotherdomain.com
  • client-portal.com

When you need it: When you manage multiple distinct websites and want to simplify certificate management, or when you run a hosting business serving multiple clients from a single server.

Practical Price Comparison

Type Let's Encrypt Commercial CAs
DV Free $15-$100/year
OV Not available $100-$400/year
EV Not available $400-$800/year
Wildcard DV Free $80-$200/year
Wildcard OV Not available $300-$600/year

The Decision Framework

One question determines the right choice: does your site accept payments or collect sensitive data?

  • No → Free DV is sufficient
  • Yes, standard e-commerce → OV is the correct choice
  • Yes, financial institution or government → EV is required

Then add the structural question: do you operate multiple subdomains or multiple domains? If yes, add Wildcard or SAN respectively.

SSL Options at CLOUD

On cloud.net.sa, all hosting plans include free DV SSL with automatic renewal. For businesses needing OV, EV, Wildcard, or Multi-Domain certificates, CLOUD offers all types with transparent SAR pricing. No hidden fees, no activation charges, no surprises at renewal time.

If you are unsure which type fits your situation, the answer for most Saudi businesses with an e-commerce component is OV — verified, professional, and appropriately priced.
