TLS 1.3: The New Generation of Encryption — What Changed

40% faster handshake. More secure. No weak cipher suites. We explain TLS 1.3 and how to enable it.

TLS 1.3 Explained: What's New and How to Use It

TLS 1.3 was officially released in 2018 (RFC 8446) but became the de facto standard in 2024-2025. If your site is still running on TLS 1.2 only, you are losing performance and security.

Difference Between TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3

Performance: 1-RTT Instead of 2-RTT

TLS 1.2 Handshake:
Client → Server: ClientHello
Server → Client: ServerHello, Certificate
Client → Server: ClientKeyExchange (+ verification)
Server → Client: Finished
Total: 2 Round-Trip Times (RTT)
= ~100-200ms overhead before data transfer

TLS 1.3 Handshake:
Client → Server: ClientHello (+ key_share)
Server → Client: ServerHello, Certificate, Finished
Total: 1 RTT
= ~50-100ms overhead only

Security: Removing Weak Protocols

TLS 1.2 supports (some weak):
├── RSA key exchange (vulnerable to BEAST attack)
├── RC4 cipher (completely broken)
├── MD5 and SHA-1 (weak)

TLS 1.3 supports only:
├── ECDHE key exchange (Perfect Forward Secrecy mandatory)
├── AES-GCM, AES-CCM, ChaCha20-Poly1305
└── SHA-256, SHA-384

Enabling TLS 1.3 on Nginx

server {
 listen 443 ssl http2;
 server_name yoursite.com;

 ssl_certificate /etc/letsencrypt/live/yoursite.com/fullchain.pem;
 ssl_certificate_key /etc/letsencrypt/live/yoursite.com/privkey.pem;

 # Enable TLS 1.3 (keep 1.2 for older browsers)
 ssl_protocols TLSv1.2 TLSv1.3;

 ssl_ciphers ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305:ECDHE-RSA-CHACHA20-POLY1305;
 ssl_prefer_server_ciphers off; # Important in TLS 1.3

 ssl_stapling on;
 ssl_stapling_verify on;
 resolver 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 valid=300s;

 ssl_session_cache shared:SSL:10m;
 ssl_session_timeout 1d;
 ssl_session_tickets off;
}

Testing Configuration

# Check supported TLS version
openssl s_client -connect yoursite.com:443 -tls1_3

# Should return:
# SSL-Session:
# Protocol: TLSv1.3
# Cipher: TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384

# Online tool (target: A+ rating)
# https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/

HSTS: Force HTTPS Always

add_header Strict-Transport-Security "max-age=31536000; includeSubDomains; preload" always;

Free Let's Encrypt Certificates

كلاود (cloud.net.sa) provides Let's Encrypt for free on all plans.

# Install Certbot
apt install certbot python3-certbot-nginx -y

# Issue and auto-configure in Nginx
certbot --nginx -d yoursite.com -d www.yoursite.com

# Auto-renewal
crontab -e
# Add: 0 12 * * * /usr/bin/certbot renew --quiet

Conclusion

TLS 1.3 = better performance (fewer handshake steps) + higher security (weak protocols removed). Enabling it takes no more than 15 minutes. Your site deserves an A+ from SSL Labs.
