Running Arabic AI Model on Your Server with Ollama

AI models that understand Arabic: Qwen, Llama 3 multilingual. Run them on your server with one command. We explain steps and selection.
Why You Need a Local Arabic Model
Running an Arabic-capable AI model on your own server solves three fundamental problems: privacy (your data never leaves your server), cost (no per-request fees after installation), and availability (works without constant internet connectivity). With Ollama, running models locally has become simple enough that a single terminal command is all it takes.
According to the Arabic-Bench benchmark that evaluates model performance in Arabic, open-source models improved by 45% in Arabic comprehension between 2024 and 2026. Models like Qwen 2.5 and Aya Expanse deliver performance approaching commercial models on many Arabic tasks.
What Is Ollama?
Ollama is an open-source tool that simplifies running large language models (LLMs) locally. Instead of dealing with PyTorch, manually downloading weights, and configuring Python environments, Ollama bundles everything into a single command. Think of it as Docker, but for AI models.
Technical Requirements
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 8GB (for 7B models) | 32GB (for 70B models) |
| Storage | 20GB | 100GB (for multiple models) |
| CPU | 4 cores | 8+ cores |
| GPU (optional) | NVIDIA 6GB VRAM | NVIDIA 16GB+ VRAM |
| OS | Linux, macOS, or Windows | Linux (best performance) |
Note: Ollama runs on CPU without a GPU, but speed will be 5-10x slower. For responsive, production use, a GPU is essential.
Installing Ollama
On Linux (Recommended Method)
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh
This command installs Ollama and creates a systemd service that starts automatically on boot.
Verify Installation
ollama --version
You should see a version number. If not, ensure /usr/local/bin is in your PATH variable.
Best Arabic Models Available
Qwen 2.5 (Recommended)
A model from Alibaba Cloud with excellent Arabic support. Available in multiple sizes:
- qwen2.5:7b — 4.7GB, runs on 8GB RAM. Suitable for simple tasks
- qwen2.5:14b — 9GB, needs 16GB RAM. Excellent balance of performance and resources
- qwen2.5:32b — 20GB, needs 32GB RAM. Performance approaching GPT-4 in Arabic
- qwen2.5:72b — 44GB, needs 64GB RAM. Best open-source Arabic performance
Aya Expanse (from Cohere)
A model designed specifically for non-English languages including Arabic. Excels at translation and summarization:
- aya-expanse:8b — 5GB, excellent Arabic performance for its size
- aya-expanse:32b — 20GB, among the best models for Arabic content
Gemma 2 (from Google)
A lightweight model with solid Arabic performance:
- gemma2:9b — 5.4GB, fast and suitable for interactive applications
- gemma2:27b — 16GB, high performance in understanding and generation
Downloading and Running a Model
Download Qwen 2.5 (14B)
ollama pull qwen2.5:14b
Download takes 5-15 minutes depending on internet speed. The file is stored in ~/.ollama/models/
Start an Interactive Chat
ollama run qwen2.5:14b
Type your question in Arabic directly. Try: "Explain cloud computing in three sentences"
Run as an API Service
Ollama automatically runs as an API server on port 11434. You can send HTTP requests:
curl http://localhost:11434/api/generate -d '{"model": "qwen2.5:14b", "prompt": "What are the benefits of cloud computing?", "stream": false}'
Creating a Custom Arabic Modelfile
A Modelfile lets you customize model behavior. Create a file named Modelfile-arabic:
FROM qwen2.5:14b
SYSTEM "You are an intelligent assistant that speaks Arabic. Always respond in Arabic. Be precise and concise. Use numbers and facts when possible."
PARAMETER temperature 0.7
PARAMETER top_p 0.9
Then create the custom model:
ollama create arabic-assistant -f Modelfile-arabic
Now you can run it: ollama run arabic-assistant
Connecting with Open WebUI
Open WebUI provides a ChatGPT-like interface that connects directly to Ollama. Install via Docker:
docker run -d -p 3000:8080 --add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway -e OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://host.docker.internal:11434 --name open-webui ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
Open http://localhost:3000 and you will see all installed Ollama models ready to use through a graphical interface.
Performance Optimization on Server
- Dedicate the full GPU to the model if available (avoid sharing with other processes)
- Use Q4_K_M quantized models for optimal balance between quality and speed
- Enable
OLLAMA_NUM_PARALLEL=4to serve multiple users simultaneously - Monitor memory usage via
ollama psand stop unused models - Place Nginx in front of Ollama as a reverse proxy with rate limiting
On CLOUD servers (cloud.net.sa), the Business plan (4 vCPU, 8GB RAM) is sufficient for running a 7B model smoothly. For 14B-32B models, the Enterprise plan (8 vCPU, 16GB) with additional RAM based on model size is the appropriate choice. Activation within one minute after payment.
Practical Use Cases
- Building an internal Arabic customer service chatbot without sending data to third parties
- Automatically summarizing Arabic documents and reports
- Generating Arabic content for websites and applications
- Real-time Arabic-English translation within your internal network
- Sentiment analysis of Arabic customer reviews and comments
Running a local Arabic model is no longer a technical luxury. It is a practical step toward data protection and localization and reducing operational costs. Start with a small model, test it on a single use case, then expand.
