Database Security: Best Practices

Limited permissions, encryption, network isolation, audit logging — 8 essential security practices for your database.
Why Database Security Is a Top Priority
The database is the beating heart of any digital system. Every customer record, every financial transaction, every sensitive piece of information flows through it. A database breach does not just mean leaked data — it means a complete collapse of trust.
In 2024, the average global cost of a database breach reached $4.88 million. In Saudi Arabia, the numbers are higher due to PDPL (Personal Data Protection Law) fines reaching 5 million SAR per violation.
Security is not a luxury. It is foundation.
Common Database Threats
1. SQL Injection Attacks
The most common attack on databases. The attacker injects SQL commands through application input fields. The result: reading entire datasets, deleting tables, or modifying records.
Solution: Always use Prepared Statements and Parameterized Queries. Never build SQL queries by manually concatenating strings.
2. Excessive Privileges
Granting every user or application root access to the database. If one account is compromised, the attacker reaches everything.
3. Unencrypted Data
Storing passwords in plain text or failing to encrypt sensitive data in transit or at rest.
4. Unprotected Backups
Backup files left without encryption or access controls are an easy target.
Best Practices for Database Security
Principle of Least Privilege
| Level | Required Permissions | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Application | SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE only | User interface |
| Developer | SELECT only on production | Debugging |
| DBA | Full access with logging | System administration |
| Backup | SELECT + LOCK only | Backup operations |
Never use the root account for any application. Create separate accounts for each function with the minimum required permissions.
Data Encryption
In Transit:
- SSL/TLS mandatory for every database connection
- Reject unencrypted connections
- Renew certificates before expiry
At Rest:
- AES-256 encryption for sensitive data
- Encrypt backup files
- Store encryption keys separately from data
Strong Authentication
- Passwords of at least 16 characters for database accounts
- Two-factor authentication for administrative access
- Rotate passwords every 90 days
- Lock accounts after 5 failed attempts
Network Management
- Database on a separate internal network — never expose it directly to the internet
- Firewall allowing connections from specific IP addresses only
- Use VPN or SSH Tunnel for remote access
- Complete separation between production and development environments
Monitoring and Auditing
Logs to Enable
- All login attempts (successful and failed)
- Schema changes (CREATE, ALTER, DROP)
- Bulk delete operations
- Permission changes
- Slow queries (potential attack indicator)
Free Monitoring Tools
- MySQL: Performance Schema + Slow Query Log
- PostgreSQL: pg_stat_statements + pgAudit
- MongoDB: Database Profiler + Audit Log
Secure Backups
The 3-2-1 rule applies strongly to databases:
- 3 copies of the data
- 2 different storage media
- 1 copy offsite
At CLOUD (cloud.net.sa), daily backup is available as an add-on service with retention up to 30 days. Backups are encrypted and stored in a separate data center in Riyadh.
Security Checklist
- Apply the principle of least privilege to all accounts
- SSL/TLS encryption for all connections
- Encrypt sensitive data at rest
- Enable audit logs
- Encrypted daily backup
- Periodic vulnerability scanning (monthly at minimum)
- Update the database system immediately when security patches are released
- Test backup restoration every 3 months
Secure Infrastructure
Database security starts with the server. A server in an accredited data center, with an isolated network, and an updated system — that is the foundation. CLOUD provides cloud servers in Riyadh with Tier III standards, managed firewall, and DDoS protection. Security starts at competitive pricing — pricing and plans.
