Cloud Migration Strategy: Practical Step by Step Guide

Migration without a plan = disaster. 6 steps: assessment, planning, testing, migration, verification, optimization. We explain each in detail.

Why Cloud Migration?

Cloud migration is the process of moving your systems, data, and applications from a traditional environment (local server or legacy hosting) to cloud infrastructure. The goal is not just changing location — the goal is improving performance, security, flexibility, and reducing long-term costs.

The Saudi reality: Many companies still run their systems on aging servers — some abroad — without real backup or adequate protection. Migration is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

The Six Migration Strategies (6 Rs)

1. Rehost (Lift and Shift)

Move the system as-is to the cloud without modifications. The fastest method with the least risk.

Best for:

  • Systems that work well and just need a better environment
  • Websites and simple applications
  • Rapid migration with tight timelines

2. Replatform

Move with minor adjustments — such as upgrading PHP version or updating the database.

Best for:

  • Systems needing minor updates during migration
  • Leveraging new environment features without full rebuild

3. Refactor

Rewrite parts of the application to fully leverage cloud capabilities.

Best for:

  • Legacy systems requiring fundamental updates
  • Converting to microservices architecture
  • Applications needing high scalability

4. Repurchase

Replace the current system with a ready-made SaaS service.

Example: Replacing a local email system with Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.

5. Retain

Keep certain systems in place — temporarily or permanently.

Best for:

  • Systems that technically cannot be migrated
  • Systems scheduled for replacement soon
  • Systems with special requirements

6. Retire

Decommission systems that are no longer needed. Many companies discover during migration planning that 10-20% of their systems are unused.

Step-by-Step Migration Plan

Phase 1: Assessment (1-2 weeks)

Asset Inventory:

Item Required Details
Servers Specs, OS, age
Applications Language, framework, version
Databases Type, size, relationships
Storage Total size, growth rate
Network Static IPs, DNS, SSL certificates
Integrations APIs, external services, system connections

Dependency Analysis:

  • Which system depends on which?
  • What is the correct migration order?
  • Are there dependencies on static IPs or specific hostnames?

Phase 2: Planning (1-2 weeks)

  • Choose migration strategy for each system
  • Define target environment (required server specifications)
  • Realistic timeline with phases
  • Rollback plan for each phase
  • Define maintenance window
  • Communicate with affected parties (development team, clients)

Phase 3: Preparation (1 week)

  • Create the new environment
  • Secure servers (firewall, SSH, updates)
  • Configure backup
  • Set up monitoring tools
  • Test connectivity between old and new environments

Phase 4: Execution

For websites and applications:

  1. Copy files to the new server
  2. Export and import the database
  3. Update connection settings
  4. Comprehensive testing on the new environment
  5. Switch DNS
  6. Intensive monitoring for 48 hours

For email:

  1. Create accounts on the new server
  2. Synchronize email (IMAP sync)
  3. Update MX records
  4. Test sending and receiving
  5. Update SPF, DKIM, and DMARC

Phase 5: Verification

  • Test all services and functions
  • Confirm acceptable performance (response time, speed)
  • Review logs for errors
  • Test backup restoration
  • Confirm monitoring and alerts are working

Migration Risks and How to Avoid Them

Risk Probability Impact Solution
Data loss Low Critical Backup before and after
Service outage Medium High Maintenance window + rollback plan
Poor performance Medium Medium Performance testing before cutover
DNS issues High Medium Low TTL before cutover
Incompatibility Low High Thorough testing in matching environment

Migrating to CLOUD
