AI Hosting Requirements: Do You Need a GPU?

Small models run on CPU. Large models need GPU. We explain requirements for each model type — and how to choose the right server.

Do You Actually Need a GPU?

The first question before researching GPU specs: do you actually need one? The answer depends on exactly what you want to do.

Task GPU Required? Reason
Running a 7B language model (Llama 3, Mistral) No — CPU is enough Quantized models (Q4/Q5) run efficiently on CPU
Running a 13B+ language model Preferred CPU possible but very slow
Running a 70B+ model Yes — mandatory CPU is impractical
Image generation (Stable Diffusion) Yes — mandatory CPU takes minutes per image
Training/Fine-tuning a model Yes — mandatory Training without GPU takes weeks
Using external API (OpenAI, Claude) No Processing happens at the provider
RAG + Embeddings only No Embeddings are lightweight on CPU
n8n automation with AI No Uses API — no local processing

Key takeaway: Many practical AI applications do not need a GPU. If you are running a 7B model with Ollama or using RAG with pgvector, a standard CPU server is sufficient.

Understanding GPU Specifications

VRAM — The Most Important Spec

VRAM (Video RAM) is the decisive factor. The model must fit entirely in VRAM to run efficiently.

Model Size VRAM Required (FP16) VRAM Required (Q4) VRAM Required (Q8)
7B 14 GB 4 GB 8 GB
13B 26 GB 8 GB 14 GB
34B 68 GB 20 GB 36 GB
70B 140 GB 40 GB 72 GB
  • FP16: Full precision — best quality but largest size
  • Q4: 4-bit quantization — quarter the size with slight quality loss
  • Q8: 8-bit quantization — half the size with near-zero quality loss

Quick rule: Number of parameters (in billions) x 0.6 GB = approximate VRAM needed in Q4 format.

CUDA Cores vs Tensor Cores

  • CUDA Cores: For general compute — important for running models (inference)
  • Tensor Cores: For matrix operations — important for training

If you are only running pre-trained models without training, CUDA Cores matter more. If you are training or fine-tuning models, Tensor Cores make a significant difference.

GPU Comparison

Card VRAM CUDA Cores Approx. Price (USD) Best Use
RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB 4,352 400 7B-13B models
RTX 4070 Ti Super 16 GB 8,448 800 7B-13B models fast
RTX 4080 Super 16 GB 10,240 1,000 13B + Stable Diffusion
RTX 4090 24 GB 16,384 1,600 34B models + light training
A100 (40GB) 40 GB 6,912 10,000+ 70B models + training
A100 (80GB) 80 GB 6,912 15,000+ 70B+ models + heavy training
H100 80 GB 16,896 30,000+ Enterprise training

NVIDIA vs AMD

Currently, NVIDIA is the only practical choice for AI hosting:

  • CUDA: Every AI framework supports NVIDIA first
  • Tensor Cores: Only available in NVIDIA
  • Software: PyTorch and TensorFlow are optimized for NVIDIA
  • AMD ROCm: Improving but not yet mature

Practical Scenarios

Scenario 1: Private ChatGPT (Open WebUI + Ollama)

Task: Private chat interface with Llama 3 8B model

Without GPU:

  • 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM — runs Q4 model
  • Speed: 5-10 tokens/second
  • Sufficient for small team (5-10 users)

With GPU:

  • RTX 4060 Ti (16 GB VRAM) — runs Q8 model
  • Speed: 30-50 tokens/second
  • Sufficient for large team (50+ concurrent users)

Scenario 2: Image Generation (Stable Diffusion)

GPU mandatory:

  • Minimum: RTX 4060 Ti (16 GB) — one image in 5-10 seconds at 512x512
  • Preferred: RTX 4090 (24 GB) — one image in 2-3 seconds at 1024x1024
  • Without GPU: one image can take 5-10 minutes — impractical

Scenario 3: RAG + Vector Database

No GPU needed:

  • 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM for pgvector
  • 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM for embedding model
  • Embeddings run on CPU with high efficiency

Scenario 4: Model Fine-Tuning

GPU mandatory (high spec):

  • Minimum: RTX 4090 (24 GB) — for 7B models with LoRA
  • Preferred: A100 (40/80 GB) — for 13B-70B models
  • RAM: 32 GB system memory minimum
  • Storage: 500 GB+ fast SSD

The Alternative: CPU with Optimizations

If you decide to work without a GPU, these optimizations improve performance:

llama.cpp with AVX-512

cmake -B build -DGGML_AVX512=ON
cmake --build build --config Release

Memory Configuration

# Disable swap to prevent slowdown
sudo swapoff -a

# Allocate large memory for model
export OLLAMA_MAX_LOADED_MODELS=1
export OLLAMA_NUM_PARALLEL=2

Choosing the Right Model

  • For Arabic: Qwen 2.5 7B or AceGPT 7B — excellent Arabic performance on CPU
  • For English: Llama 3.1 8B or Mistral 7B — best quality/speed balance
  • For coding: CodeLlama 7B or DeepSeek Coder 6.7B

Cost: GPU vs API

Comparison Server with GPU External API
Monthly Cost Fixed Variable based on usage
Unlimited Usage Yes No — every request costs money
Data Privacy Complete Data leaves the Kingdom
Break-even 3-6 months of heavy usage —

Recommendation

For most Saudi companies, the smart plan:

  1. Start without GPU — a CPU Cloud Server from CLOUD (cloud.net.sa) with Ollama and a 7B model
  2. Evaluate performance — if speed is sufficient, you saved yourself GPU costs
  3. Scale up if needed — add vCPU and RAM
  4. Move to GPU only if you need: Stable Diffusion, 70B+ models, or training

CLOUD offers cloud servers starting from competitive pricing — pricing and plans with pre-installed AI templates — try without GPU first, then decide.
